Soil Biotechnology

Soil Biotechnology

Head of Division: Prof. Dr.Ir. Dwi Andreas Santosa, MS

Profile

This research group studies the development of soil biology sciences that play a role in determining soil properties and plant growth; the development of soil biotechnology through the utilization of soil organisms and their engineering results to improve soil quality, plant growth, bioremediation, and biodetoxification of soil pollutants; the development of technology for utilizing soil organisms through biofertilizer technology and composting; and the development of molecular biology sciences to study soil ecology, soil biodiversity, population dynamics, genetic exchange processes, and tracking as well as the impact of genetically engineered organisms in the soil.

Mandate of the Division:

The development of Soil Biology sciences (macro, meso, micro soil biota) which play a role in determining the physical, chemical, biological properties of soil, plant growth, and its ecology; the development of Soil Biotechnology through the utilization of soil organisms and their engineered results.

Scope:

All activities related to the utilization of soil organisms (biota) followed by physiological, biochemical processes, and the results of their metabolic compounds for the improvement of soil quality and environment, plant growth, bioremediation, and biodetoxification of various soil pollutants; also activities related to biofertilizer technology and the decomposition of organic materials (composting and its quality); additionally, activities in molecular biology sciences to study soil ecology, soil biodiversity, population dynamics, genetic exchange processes and tracking, and the impact of genetically engineered organisms in the soil and its environment.

Focus of the Division:

The division focuses on the development of soil biology sciences that play a role in determining soil properties and plant growth; the development of soil biotechnology through the utilization of soil organisms and their engineered results to improve soil quality, plant growth, bioremediation, and biodetoxification of soil pollutants; the development of technology for utilizing soil organisms through biofertilizer technology and composting; and the development of molecular biology sciences to study soil ecology, soil biodiversity, population dynamics, genetic exchange processes, and tracking as well as the impact of genetically engineered organisms in the soil.
